TTD Research Update — September 18, 2026

Updated Thesis

The Trade Desk operates a self-service, cloud-based demand-side platform that lets advertising agencies and their advertiser clients plan, buy and optimize data-driven digital campaigns across display, video, audio, native, social and connected TV, with 3,843 employees and a founder-led management team. Business quality is genuinely high on the unit economics: TTM gross margin of 83.0%, TTM operating margin of 19.6%, TTM net margin of 13.6%, ROE of 16.1% and free cash flow of $1.84 per share against $6.36 of revenue per share, which is why the shares change hands at only 7.76 times free cash flow and 7.52 times EV/EBITDA. The problem is that the growth engine has stalled: revenue rose just 3.0% year over year in the most recent quarter while earnings fell 28.6% year over year in that same quarter, and Amazon's ad revenue grew 26% in the comparable period, so the market is pricing TTD as a decelerating, competitively pressured asset rather than the compounder it was.

The investment grade as of this refresh is C — average business quality. B-tier business, C-tier valuation: 1.8% downside to $14.00 fair value.
