SMCI Research Update — September 20, 2026 (Updated)

Updated Thesis

Super Micro Computer designs and sells modular, open-standard server and storage systems, with a growing franchise in liquid- and air-cooled AI racks such as the NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72, sold through direct, distribution and OEM channels to data center, cloud, AI, 5G and edge customers. The business quality is mixed: revenue grew 93.2% year over year and earnings grew 503.7% in the most recent quarter, ROE is 25.1%, and the stock trades at 0.72 times sales, 11.67 times trailing earnings and 8.94 times EV/EBITDA, but TTM gross margin is only 10.8%, TTM operating margin 7.1% and TTM net margin 5.7%, free cash flow per share is negative $11.58, and FY2026 operating cash flow was negative $6.810 billion. Concentration is severe, with one customer at 28.1% of FY2026 sales and one supplier at 63.1% of FY2026 purchases, and governance is clouded by an adverse internal-control opinion, ongoing BIS and Office of Export Enforcement inquiries, and a prior DOJ investigation that investors appear to have moved past.

The investment grade as of this refresh is C — average business quality. C-tier business, C-tier valuation: 4.2% downside to $41.44 fair value.

Our 12–18 Month Outlook

Quality companies held over a multi-year horizon benefit from compounding fundamentals and the patience to ride through short-term volatility. Super Micro Computer, Inc. remains in our covered universe with a average-quality assessment. We update research when material data changes — earnings revisions, management shifts, or regime changes in valuation — not on every price fluctuation.

Long-term accumulation of quality businesses at fair or better prices is the core of the Patient Accumulator approach. Research updates like this one inform whether to add, hold, or wait for a better zone — not whether to react to short-term price moves.
